Surfing Masters ready to defend titles

The Ugu District will be represented by five surfers, the youngest Justin Maisch will compete in the over 40s division.

The Ugu Surfriders Club is geared to take on seven other districts from Surfing South Africa at the iconic Garden Route surf spot of Victoria Bay near George in the Western Cape in the 2021 SA Masters Surfing Championships.

The event gets underway today (19th) at 07:00 and will end with the finals on Sunday (22nd), and features surfers competing in seven divisions with two local surfers defending their titles.

Heather Clark of Shelly Beach will defend her crown at the 2021 SA Masters Surfing Championships kicking off today in Victoria Bay in the Western Cape.

The Ugu District will be represented by five surfers, the youngest Justin Maisch will compete in the over 40s division.

In the over 45s division, defending champion Gary van Wieringen will once again attempt to stake his claim as the best surfer in the country, as he will put his title on the line for the first time since 2019.

The master of all ladies is none other than Shelly Beach’s multiple and reigning champion Heather Clark, who will also be defending her title in a division that has no age groups, and is open to anyone over the age of 30.

All smiles in the defence of his 2019 SA Masters Surfing Championship title is Gary van Wieringen who is the reigning champion in the over 40s division, as no competitions were held in 2020.

Others competing are Grant van der Linde, owner of Africa Surfboards in the over 45s category, Reg Horne of St Michaels in the over 55s and Warren ‘Wazo’ Wareing, the oldest of the group who will show his dominance in the over 60s division.

This is the first time since the inaugural SA Masters Championships was held at St Michaels on Sea in 2006, that Victoria Bay will host this popular event.

It’s all about surf action this weekend as over 40s defending SA Masters Surfing Champion title holder Gary van Wieringen aims to repeat his 2019 heroics and win the title once again.

Seven national champions will be decided on the day of the finals and the district with the highest number of points will win the Masters Cup.
