Cyclist Flavio tackles toughest race on earth for charity

Scarpa aims to change even more lives through this tough race.

Cyclist Flavio Scarpa is taking on the life-changing Munga MTB, also known as ‘the toughest race on earth’ in order to raise money for the Cycling 4 Mobility non-profit organisation.

The NPO members are a group of cyclists who, through their passion for cycling, are raising awareness and assisting people, who through age, illness or misfortune, have lost the ability to be mobile without the use of a wheelchair.

Since the NPO was started in around 2012, it has already given away close to 300 wheelchairs and helped change many lives for the better.

Scarpa aims to change even more lives through this tough race.

The Munga is a one-stage MTB ride from Bloemfontein to Cape Town and a distance of 1124km is to be completed within 120 hours which gives participants five days to receive the completion medal.

The event will kick-off on December 1 and Scarpa’s target is to attempt completing the race in 96 hours in a four day stretch and and he hopes to raise R200 000.

“I have been organising the Sappi Scottburgh MTB and Trail Run weekend since 2012, and this has been an excellent fundraiser for this cause which is very close to my heart,” he said.

“Sadly, due to the pandemic I have been unable to host this event which has impacted on my fundraising abilities.”

The cyclist requests the public’s help in reaching his target by pledging or making donations which he believes will make a great difference in the lives of many disabled people.

“This event is to challenge myself to the extreme and to try to ease the burden for those less fortunate.”

Scarpa has already received a few pledges, but still has a long way to go to reach his target.
