Paul Swanepoel shines on junior circuit
There was plenty to play for at Southbroom Golf Club, Margate Country Club and Port Shepstone Country Club.
The three-tournament swing of the KwaZulu-Natal junior golf circuit came to the South Coast recently.
Numbers were not great, thanks mainly to Covid, a very late finishing school term, the top players away at IPT, no shows and withdrawals.

Nonetheless, there was plenty to play for at Southbroom Golf Club, Margate Country Club and Port Shepstone Country Club.

Paul Swanepoel won the Purtell trophy at Southbroom on one under par 71.
Although he lives on the north coast and attends Kearsney College, he is a member at Southbroom and the family has a holiday home on the coast.
Thobelani Magwaza (Umhlali CC) was second on 74, followed by Lusanda Zondi (Kilbarchan) on 75 and Siyamthanda Mbhele (Kilbarchan) on 78.
Kai Hielckert (Southbroom) rounded out the top five on 79.
Byron Chandler (Kloof) won the B division on 83, while Zondi won the overall nett on 72.

The following day the juniors played for the Hibiscus Trophy at Margate CC.
Scores were not great, but Zondi did enough to secure victory with six over par 77.
In a tie for second were Hielckert and Swanepoel on 78.

Steph Meyer (Kokstad) won the B division on 95 and Damian Marais (Durban CC) won the overall nett on 75.
The mini circuit rounded out at Port Shepstone, where Magwaza bounced back after an 86 at Margate, to card 78 and ultimately win in a play-off against Keagan Horner (Bluff National).
They went four extra holes before Magwaza triumphed.

In a tie for third on 79 were 12 year-old Harry Clayton (Simbithi) and Swanepoel, with Hielckert a shot further behind, carding a disappointing 80 by his standards. “Just could not get the putter going,” he said.
Swanepoel was awarded the Southern Natal Nomads trophy for the best aggregate score over the three events.
