Golfing equilibrium restored as Big Fish regains San Lameer Open title

He was less than happy having to write down seven on his card, and then had to hole a 10 foot putt for bogey on the next to avoid starting double-double.

Hitting a tee shot out of bounds on the very first hole probably isn’t the best way to start a strokeplay tournament.

But that’s what Gavin Sole did at the San Lameer Open/Southern KZN Closed last Sunday.

It’s not like he doesn’t know the course – he’s won the tournament nine times, also won the Southern KZN Open there, and played in a number of IPTs at this scenic layout.

He was less than happy having to write down seven on his card, and then had to hole a 10 foot putt for bogey on the next to avoid starting double-double.

“I thought to myself what’s going on here,” he said.

However, in typical Big Fish fashion, he fought back in style, holing a 9-iron for eagle on the stroke one 7th hole, and then very nearly following it up with another eagle on the par five 8th hole.

He ended up scoring 70 and 70 for a four under total and victory by two over Dian Wilmot (Mount Edgecombe CC), who had a pair of 71s.

In third place was Elvis Khawula (Margate CC) who surprised himself with rounds of 74 and 70. “Better than expected,” he said.

Defending champion Sean Baker, who made the trip from George, had two rounds of 75.

The B division was won by Werner Duggan (Southbroom GC) on 76 points, with Frans Klopper (San Lameer CC) the runner-up.
