Rain offers respite at ladies’ alliance competition

The scores were so good in fact that the HNA saw fit to adjust the PCC by -1.

The much anticipated ladies’ sponsored alliance took place at Umkomaas Golf Club last Saturday, and the weather couldn’t have been better.

A smattering of rain every now and then helped to cool things down, and judging by the scores all the players appreciated the respite from the terribly hot days we’ve been experiencing.

The scores were so good in fact that the HNA saw fit to adjust the PCC by -1.

Husband and wife team of Russel and Evija McKelvey and Noel and Heather Parsonage were just too good and emerged victorious on an unassailable 93 points. There were six birdies amongst them on the way round, including one from each player. Great job!

Second place on a normally winning total of 89 points were Lesa Vergottini, Dave Kemp, Barrie Taylor, and Mike Cromhout. Just one point back, on 88 points, were Robbie Bruce, Mike Madsen, Alan Munn and Jeremy Boyd.

Taking fourth place via count-out on 86 points were Wayne Addison, Mikey Eriksen, Damien O’Connell and Rory Bernardis.

An exceptional result considering the team’s combined handicap was just 21! It was the youngsters who led from the front with Damien shooting a personal best of 1 over 71. Well done.

Nearest the pins were won by Martin Du Plessis (4th), Chris Coxell (9th) – whose tee shot must have only just missed going in the hole, Russell Cumming (13th) and Wayne Addison (17th).

There were eight two clubs, yet another testament to the wonderful condition of the greens: Norman Mackay made a remarkable long putt downhill on the notoriously quick 4th green, four gents birdied the 9th Damien O’Connell, Rory Bernardis, Wally Kent and Chris Coxell, Russell converted his accurate tee shot on 13th and Natalie Singer chipped in on 17th.

Thanks to the generosity of the sponsors, every one of the 71 players in the field received a prize. Congratulations to lady captain Linda Toward and her ladies section for putting on another fantastic tournament.

Max van der Heever won the raffle’s main prize of a delicious snack hamper and unbelievably her name was drawn again for the third prize too. Let’s hope she took the advice and continued her lucky streak at the casino *wink*

Wally Kent continued to play outstanding golf, winning last Wednesday’s IPS competition on 38 points. Nearest rivals were Dave Mulroy, who counted out Robbie Mathias for second place on 36 points. Steady eddy Dave Kemp came in fourth on 35 points and Trevor Osborne counted out four others on 34 points to take fifth and final prize.

The Umkomaas gents travelled to Mount Edgecombe for the first Allerton League match of the year. Paired against Kloof, the gents struggled in the morning foursomes, despite the immaculate course conditions, and made some comebacks in the afternoon. Alas, not enough to take the win. Speaking to some of the players, it was noted that the opposition teams have strengthened and so our boys will need to focus if they wish to retain the trophy. Better luck next time boys!

We would all like to wish Sabiha Hulley the best as she departs this weekend for Johannesburg where she will be competing in the SA Amateur Champs at Royal JHB and Kensington. May your drives be long and the putts short.
