Fishing for hope – and Akshay
Myuran is combining his work as a teacher with a desire to serve the community, especially those in need, by organising fishing competition fundraisers.
Catching your first fish is a joy every child should be able to experience.
That’s the opinion of Myuran Moodley, chief organiser of a fishing competition to be held this Saturday (19th) to raise funds for Akshay Maharaj’s cancer treatment.
It will be held between Stiebel Rocks, Pumula and Sea Park, with marshalls in attendance, from 7am to noon.
Prizegiving will be held at The Block at 1pm.
Myuran is combining his work as a teacher with a desire to serve the community, especially those in need, by organising fishing competition fundraisers.
“I have fond memories of running around in my blue boots, following my dad to the beach, excited about a day of fishing with him,” he said.
He presented the idea of the fundraisers to some of his close friends and they decided to start the Fish For Hope Foundation.
“The idea was simple, to help less fortunate and underprivileged kids in our community to experience a day of fishing and instill life-skills through the sport we love so much,” he said.
The organisation consists of five key members, namely Myuran, Daniel Govender, Chante Shunmugam, Thavansan Asari and Seeachian Naicker.
The plan is to get it registered as a non-profit organisation and help the community through fishing.
“Akshay is a friend, fellow fisherman and a well known member of our community who needs our help,” said Myuran.
Tickets can be purchased from Luckys in Port Shepstone or Fisherman’s Warehouse in Durban.
Cost is R100 for adults and R50 for children (under 18).
Seven prizes to be won – three for adults, three for children and one raffle.
“Please come out and support Akshay, even if you not fishing,” said Myuran.
