Hole-in-one for Keith Vergottini at tricky 13th

The Umkomaas Ladies League team got their 2022 campaign off to a great start, beating Scottburgh at Scottburgh.

After nearly 30 years of playing, Keith Vergottini was delighted to make his first hole-in-one at the tricky 13th hole at Umkomaas last Wednesday during the midweek competition.

After a strong front nine Keith said that he was disappointed to have begun the first few holes on the back poorly and decided when he stood up on the 13th tee box to take a bit more club.

He described his 4-hybrid strike as pure and said that he watched it follow the wind left to right (as planned), bounce over the bunker and run straight towards the hole.

At first Keith couldn’t comprehend what was happening, but when playing partner Alan Eriksen shouted and began running around, waving in celebration, he realised he’d made the ace.

When asked how it felt, Keith replied: “What a beautiful experience, thrilled to have shared it with my fourball of friends and all those who shared a drink in celebration with me in the pub that evening.”

The Umkomaas Ladies League team got their 2022 campaign off to a great start, beating Scottburgh at Scottburgh.

With all matches requiring Umkomaas to give handicap advantage to their opposition and rainy conditions, it was going to be a ding-dong battle.

Number one pairing, Natalie Singer and Heather Parsonage, kept things ticking along, carrying a one up advantage down the last stretch.

A solid par on the 17th was enough to seal the 2 and 1 win and put 2 points onto the sheet.

Second pairing of Lesa Vergottini and Evija McKelvey had a tight game with the lead exchanging several times over the round.

The ladies took the game all the way down the 18th but sadly lost the hole and were defeated 2-up. The final pairing of Lesley Fraser and Max van den Heever came out firing and took the lead early and finished with a resounding 9 and 7 victory.

The first installment of the 2022 Alliance League kicked off last Saturday with 66 players in the field.

Coming out on top on an impressive 92 points was Tom and Dean Naicker, Kuben Naidoo, and Dinesh Maharaj. Methinks going out early when it’s so hot provides an advantage.

Second place, and ones to watch for the season, were Russel and Evija McKelvey, and Noel and Heather Parsonage on 87 points. Third place on 84 points were Alwyn and Byron Stander, Brian Kassel, and Christo van den Heever.

Taking the jackpot on 11 points was Natalie Singer, who also shared the 2-club money with Mike Madsen, them each making a birdie on a short.

Next week is medal, and tee times can be booked via the Pro shop on 039 9731042.
