Lions roar at volleyball tourney
The prize-money was split equally between the men and women's division, R50 000 each.
Volleyballers competed at the Marburg Sports Complex in the Port Shepstone Volleyball Outdoor Championship for some tantalising prize-money, reputedly the most to be put up for such a tournament in the area.
Winners in the women’s section were UKZN (Westville), with Butterfly VC from Richards Bay runners-up and Predators from Durban in third place.
The men’s division was dominated by Lions VC from Chatsworth, with Liberte VC from Tongaat the worthy runners-up. Third place went to UKZN (Westville).
Division 1 comprised teams from the Port Shepstone area.
Survivors emerged victorious, ahead of Evolution and City Boys.
However, it wasn’t only about claiming cash, it was also about giving back and caring for those in need.
At least R40 000 has been raised through entry fees, raffles and pledges from stall holders – organisers are still tallying up the final amounts so it could be more – and much of this will be split between Port Shepstone Volleyball Association, Hope Park and helping towards Akshay Maharaj’s cancer treatment.
Tournament convener Deyesh Naidoo thanked the players, sponsors (from around the country) and supporters for making it a tremendous success, for making a dream come true.
Stall holders played their part, too, with the wondrous smells of delicious food wafting through the air throughout the weekend.
When it came to prize-money, this was split equally between the men and women’s division, R50 000 each.
There were special awards of R1000 each, five in each category, men and women.
For those interested in the breakdowns, prizemoney was as follows: 1 R25 000, 2 R15 000, 3 R5000.
Division 1 – 1 R5000, 2 R3000, 3 R1000.
