Romeos take win in spite of rain and tricky greens

With majority of the field posting scores in the low 70s, it's safe to say that the March edition is likely to be one of handful of scores not considered when the final log table is tallied.

It seems that the Romeos team made up of Russel and Evija McKelvey and Noel and Heather Parsonage, are the ones to beat in the 2022 Alliance League.

Their good range of handicaps and consistent golfing and scoring abilities translates to the perfect combination it seems, even in the pouring rain!

Only half of the 63 players who set off last Saturday managed to finish as the continual rain put many off, some just a few holes in.

Those that persevered found conditions challenging as the steady rain meant little to no carry or run in the muddy ground, and slow, tricky greens.

Winners on a good score of 82 points, considering the tough conditions, were the Romeos. In second place, were the youngsters Jordan and Rory Bernardis, Noah Rudwick and Damien O’Connell on 80 points.

The Naickers team of Tom, Tash, and Dean Naicker and Kuben Naidoo counted out Harold Horsley, Don Bradshaw, Bing Opie and Alan Munn on 77 points for third place.

Two club money was shared between Brian Stephen (4th and 9th), Natalie Singer (9th), John Webster (9th) and Riek Jansen van Rensburg (17th). No one managed to secure the required 10 points over the four jackpot holes.

Nearest the pins, kindly sponsored by Dave Kemp, were won by Russel McKelvey (4th) and Noel Parsonage (9th).

The 13th and 17th greens were left untouched and these bottles of wine were awarded by lucky draw, allowing even those who’d called it quits on the golf course due to rain to stand a chance for the prizes.

It seems that retiring to the coast and playing golf mid-week is great for your golf, as the ongoing high Wednesday IPS scores attest.

The field of 38 players enjoyed warm conditions and all the prize winners, including those counted out for fifth place, scored better than handicap.

Winning on the day, with a magnificent score of 44 points was Alan Munn. Runner-up on an equally impressive 41 points was Sue Boucher. Russell Cumming’s 39 points only scored him third place and Peter Toward took fourth on 38 points. Brian Kassel’s 37 points counted out Harold Horsley for fifth.

KidzGolf is on hiatus during school holidays and will return after the Easter weekend.
