Atmosphere ‘electric’ as boxing comes to Margate

The atmosphere was electric.

Some of the top amateur boxers from across KwaZulu-Natal including South Coast local fighters came to the Box 360 Nowhere to Run Fight Night, last Saturday.

It was held at Level 10 Lounge, Bar, and Grill in Margate and the venue was aptly suited for the event. It was presented by owner of Box 360, Roland van Rooyen.

Passionate about the sport, he has boxed and trained others for most of his life, taking in youth and struggling individuals, helping them get back on track using boxing as a catalyst.

There were 20 fights in total, from a range of different weight classes. Each fight got the crowd to their feet, screaming in support of fighters giving it their all. The atmosphere was electric.

The occasion ran smoothly and without complication, thanks to the organisers and various sponsors.

An auction was held for bidding for signed golden gloves which raised R6 500 for the non-profit organisation, Tidy Town Shelly Beach to Margate.

Every minute of each three round fight was close competition.

A panel of judges decided on winners and trophies were given out at prize-giving.

Boxing clubs invited to the event were Revolution (Pietermaritzburg), Revolution (Hillcrest), Vids (Umhlanga), Wild Coast Combat, Knuckle Game (Durban North), Mkhwenyana, Haze, Relentless (Berea Durban), Domination (Durban North) and Box360 (Margate).

The final fight included two of the more experienced fighters Douglas Mbuka Mbenza (Relentless) and South Coast local Nara Vellem (Box 360).

Both fighters gave it everything they had and, after an encore from the crowd, went an extra round before concluding in an amicable draw.
