Fly anglers head to Paddock after rains

The Schwartz family of father Ken and son David accounted for five of the eight fish netted, with Arthur Cary netting two and Neil Scott netting one.

The South Coast Fly Anglers April fresh water outing was held at a farm dam in the Paddock area with the target species being bass.

The outing was well attended, notwithstanding concerns about the water clarity and fish behaviour following the recent heavy and protracted rains in the area, in fact widespread in KZN with devastating consequences for people and infrastructure.

The meet was attended by 10 members who arrived between 06:00 for the early risers and, umm, a bit later for some of the others, no names, no pack drill.

South Coast Fly Anglers having a hard time relaxing after an early morning fishing outing

One member, who shall remain nameless, arrived latish for a chat and a coffee, and then disappeared – a reminder that the SCFA is not only about flyfishing but camaraderie as well.

The fishing was tough.

The Schwartz family of father Ken and son David accounted for five of the eight fish netted, with Arthur Cary netting two and Neil Scott netting one.

The remaining members, who shall also remain nameless, had to console themselves that flyfishing is a multi-faceted sport, and not just about catching fish – more on this aspect of our sport in future articles.

Suffice it to say that flyfishing is regarded by many, not just the guys who don’t catch fish, as an art form, an exercise routine, a social activity, an easy way of disposing of hard earned cash, an opportunity for some peace and quiet, while ‘flytying’ is a whole creative and artistic world on its own, with some flytyers not even being flyfishermen.

The outing ended with the customary braai.
