Lots of trophies for Gules
There was some entertaining produced and the club hopes more members will play next year.
Uvongo Tennis Club‘s championships for the year have been wrapped up, with Gules Salottolo walking away with the lion’s share of the trophies.
The men’s singles final was a hard-fought battle between Gules and Duncan Biggar.

It was very even for most of the first set, but then Gules forged ahead and subsequently sailed on to take the title in two sets.
The men’s singles plate final was between Jan Kaajan and André Parnell.
Jan, with his near superhuman athleticism, got his power game on target and beat André in two sets.

The drawn handicap doubles final, between Ralph Burls and Augustine Tugli (who owed one point every game) and Nigel Wareing and Norman Davies could have gone either way, with a lot of scampering, scuffling and retrieving of lobs that had been sent heavenwards.
It was an entertaining final with Nigel and Norman ultimately victorious.
The mixed doubles final was played between Gules Salottolo/Lyn Shell and Duncan Biggar/Di Digby.

Now, let’s be honest, a mixed doubles court can be dangerous terrain if players have even the most stable of marriages – funny, how when friends team up, goodwill abounds. Every good shot is rewarded with a little hand-slap and errors are shrugged off with a consoling word.
Gules and Lyn took the honours in two sets.
The ladies singles and ladies doubles final could not be played as Ellené Barbadimos, who was in both finals, took ill.

The most improved player award was presented to Augustine ‘Lob King’ Tugli.
The sportsman award went to Bruce ‘Never Give Up’ Lill.
Prize-giving was held on Brian’s Deck, followed by a delicious boerie roll. Thank you to Uvongo Spar for sponsoring the eats.

Thank you also to Peter Digby, the championships director, who spent a few hours a-plenty working out the scheduled matches.
He did a remarkable job, evidenced in the handicap event, where the pairings were perfect, as per the final scores.

Thanks also to chairman Ken Coleman, who quietly gets on with things in the background, much appreciated.
Hopefully, more members will play this fun event next year.
