Tuning In: Brad brings home grand master trophy
Community news and events for Pennington and surrounding areas.
In early July, Brad Keet of Scottburgh was chosen to represent the EBA bodyboarding team in the South African Body Boarding Championships.
The 5A rated event saw riders from provinces from all around South Africa competing.
Brad is 49 years-old, so surfed in the grand masters division.
The contest was held at North Beach in Durban, as well as Ansteys on the Bluff.
Conditions were not the greatest with minimal wave selection.
The final was held at Ansteys beach on July 10 which Brad won, taking home the grand master trophy for the third time in four appearances.
Brad has been riding waves for 34 years, with Cave Rock, Vic Bay and Scottburgh among his favourite spots..
Road ahead
It’s almost the end of July already. In five months’ time Christmas will be over and 2023 will be looming.
But back to current matters.
Councillor Edwin Baptie has reported back with an update on the roads programme.
A meeting was held with the appointed contractor who did a site inspection of some of our roads this week.
The open space on the corner of Barracouta Bend will be reserved for a site office from which the operations will be managed.
The assessment of all road infrastructure has been completed and costed.
This year will deal with priorities based mainly on traffic or usage.
Eddie is still pushing for a provision to fill all potholes to render the road network usable without incurring damages.
The July ward committee minutes will be posted on the WhatsApp group in order to keep the community abreast of what is being done.
Meetings are usually held on the second Monday of the month – the next meeting is scheduled for August 8.
Meetings are open to all and community members are welcome to make suggestions.
Eddie is awaiting schedules for verge maintenance and streetlights maintenance from Umdoni’s management. It is all sounding so positive and so proactive.
Conservancy
A special general meeting of Pennington Conservancy will be held at Relton Hall, Pennington on August 6, 2022 at 14:00.
The conservancy ship has found itself in some pretty rough waters of late, and it’s time to steer her back on course.
The meeting will provide the opportunity to appoint a crew which will guide her back on course to continue with projects that enhance the natural beauty of this extraordinary village.
Differences of opinion are part and parcel of everyday life, and we must accept that our personal views may not always be universally accepted.
However, the meeting is the time to discuss issues to promote unity and a shared sense of purpose.
Your attendance and contribution to guide the future course of the ship are vital.
Your ideas and suggestions are most welcome as they are the foundations of our future success and serve to bring new life into the conservancy.
Please make every effort to attend the meeting.
Mary McKenzie, with the assistance of Linda Stead, has very kindly agreed to chair the meeting and oversee the voting process.
Voting will be done by secret ballot, so please bring a pen.
Rubbish
I asked last week if there was any knowledge as to the construction which is happening at the back of the Pennington Municipal Building?
Buildings are being broken down and other buildings are being built up. The rubble/rubbish is so ugly. Is there an explanation?
There is also often burning at the back of this building. Are there people living there? I’m still asking. The smell of burning is intense.
Emergency lights
I reported last week that it appeared that Eskom would be suspending load shedding shortly. Well that was short-lived.
As I type on Monday July 25, I receive a message to say that they have changed their minds. Out with the candles, torches, emergency lights and gas cookers. We’ve got this.
