A month, almost to the day, after her husband Noel scored an ace on the 17th at Umkomaas Golf Club, Heather Parsonage holed out with an 8-iron on the par three 4th hole.
It is Heather’s second, her first having come some years ago at San Lameer. It’s the fourth ace recorded by members in 2022, with half coming on the notoriously challenging (especially in winter) fourth hole.
The sixth edition of the Alliance League was hotly contested by 64 players, and the excellent scores posted were a testament to the breathless day and great course conditions.
The Umkomaasters and Naickers posted 89 points, but it was the Umkomaasters (Nelson Moonsamy, Saga Reddy, Barrie Taylor and Vivian Naicker) who took top spot on count out. Third place when to regular prizewinners The Romeos with 88 points.
It’s wonderful to see the Wednesday fields continue to grow, and this past week 49 players competed for honours in the Individual Stableford competition.
Wally Kent secured first place on an impressive 40 points, with Russell Cumming beating Jeremy Boyd for runner-up honours, on a count-out with 39 points.
Fourth and fifth were also decided on count-out, on a better than handicap 38 points, with Keith Vergottini beating Brian Stephen.
Umkomaas is very proud of our youngsters who continue to represent the club and do so well.
These past holidays saw three trophy competitions played on the Lower South Coast and the boys were regularly in the prizes.
At the Alfred Country Champs played at Port Shepstone on July 8, Damien O’Connell finished in tie second, one behind the leader, on 76 gross with his cousin Jordan Bernardis finishing T10 on 81.
The next day, the boys competed in the Terry Mitchell Trophy at Margate, and Damien finished T8, shooting 78 gross, and Jordan Bernardis another steady 81, seeing him take T14 spot.
Twin brother Rory Bernardis competed in the Purtell Trophy at Southbroom the following day and finished tenth, shooting 78 gross in the 18-hole competition.
Congratulations must go to the boys whose daily practice is paying dividends.
