Ups and downs for trail runners

David and Sarah are champion runners.

The Sappi Scottburgh MTB and Trail Run weekend kicked off last Saturday, with three different trail running events: 20km, 12km and 5km.

The men’s 20km race was won by event veteran David Lamont, followed by Scottburgh local Merrick Kennedy five minutes later in second place.

“It was fantastic out there and the trails were good and really well marked, and the water tables were great,” said Lamont.

Sarah Gray was the first finisher in the women’s 20km and placed third in the overall race results.

Gray described the race as quite difficult with a lot of ups and downs, but was nothing short of a beautiful event.

Bongani Makathini was the strongest runner in the 12km race and earned himself first place. Kristen Hulley took the women’s 12km title.

In the shortest event of the day, the 5km race, Luke Newlands was crowned champ and the women’s first place winner was Kayleigh Lindeque who also placed third overall.
