Despite setbacks, Stuart Marais is star rider

Riders enjoyed the day out and the trails.

Stuart Marais was the top rider at the Sappi Scottburgh MTB and Trail Run held last weekend.

Marais won the 40km marathon, even after initially falling behind by taking a wrong turn.

“Two of us got away early and then we took a major wrong turn,” he said.

“The marshal told us to rejoin the course and when we got back on track we were miles behind. Eventually we caught the rest of the guys and were with them for a while before I managed to get away for a bit, then I took another wrong turn so the guys caught up with me.”

On one of the last climbs, he managed to get ahead and finish first.

South Coast rider Hayley Smith won the women’s race.

“It was a really awesome day out and the trails were amazing and I pushed from the word go and got ahead, then just managed my pace the whole way through to the end.”

Youngster Joshua Paul had the fastest time for the 20km race and Madison Bateson placed second overall, but was the fastest female rider in the race.
