San Lameer CC all set to host Seniors IPT

Some high quality golf will be on show.

San Lameer Country Club is set to host the South African Seniors and SuperSeniors IPT from April 17 to 21. One has to be aged 50 years to qualify as a senior golfer.
The weather has cooled down a touch and it should be just about perfect when things get under way on Monday. Some recent rain will have softened the course, which should encourage some low scoring, especially as the format is matchplay.

Lyall McNeil (Durban CC) is currently the number two ranked senior in the country. He had been ranked number one for quite some time before that.

Home province KwaZulu-Natal have never been able to win this event – very tough against the depth Central Gauteng and Western Province possess. However, spearheaded by the current SA number two senior Lyall McNeill (Durban CC) and number three, Morgan Phillips (Victoria CC), they will certainly give it their all.

The team comprises: Basil Naidoo (captain – Durban CC), Keith Forde (Durban CC), Murray Gilson (Durban CC), Mike Matthews (Umhlali CC), Lyall McNeill (Durban CC), Guy O’Connor (Kloof), Morgan Phillips (Victoria CC), Gary Welsh (Kloof CC). Manager – Mike Atkinson.

The SuperSeniors – those are the players over 60 years old – are Richard Nel (captain), Lynton Beckett (Royal Durban), Kevin Curren (Durban CC), Noel Parsonage (Umkomaas). Manager – Dave Fisher.

Golf director Pierre van Vuuren said it was a wonderful honour for San Lameer Country Club to once again host a prestigious IPT. “It gives us a fantastic opportunity to showcase the South Coast and San Lameer to a national audience,” he said.

“The course is always in great condition and I believe a fantastic matchplay course, with loads of risk and reward holes. I’m sure it will prove to be a good test.” What makes playing the event at San Lameer somewhat special is that all the teams stay on the estate and will be able to enjoy all the amenities and wildlife during their stay. “We look forward to welcoming all the unions,” he said.
