National spearfishing champs soon

The Hibiscus Underwater Club and the Southern KZN team would like to welcome the KZN team, Western Province, Boland, Eastern Province and the SAUFF team to the Ugu district.

The Hibiscus Underwater Club, located in Port Shepstone, is proud to be hosting the South African National Spearfishing championships.
The competition will take place between May 8 and 13.

During the five day window the ideal days will be selected to have three competitive days.
Ideally, two days from Hibberdene Ski-boat Club and one day from Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club.

The areas to be fished will be Zone 1 from Hibberedene North to Ifafa.
Zone 2 will be from Hibberedene south to Port Shepstone lighthouse and Zone 3 will be from Port Shepstone lighthouse to Margate.

The basic format of the competition is that each athlete is allowed one fish per species.

All species score differently and as a species point along with the weight of that species will be added together to achieve a final score per athlete.

It is not the biggest fish that wins the day but rather who can out-whit the smartest fish and accumulate those special species and high points.
The diving will take place from the white water zone to some athletes venturing to great depths all in search of those special fish.

The weigh-in each day will take place at Hibberdene Ski-boat Club.
All diving is done form a boat, there is a minimum of two divers and a boat driver per boat.

As with all spearfishing competitions it is essential that the teams and athletes know and understand the area.
This requires that visiting teams and unions would come from far and spend in some cases three or four weeks on the South Coast.

The Hibiscus Underwater Club and the Southern KZN team would like to welcome the KZN team, Western Province, Boland, Eastern Province and the SAUFF team to the Ugu district. Thanks are extended to sponsors.
