Interclub joy for Southbroom – again

The tournament was played over three local courses over three days.

Southbroom Golf Club won Interclub for the third time in fours years, successfully defending their A-division title in a hard-fought final against Kloof CC.

Southbroom led the strokeplay qualifying rounds, played at Port Shepstone and Margate, by some margin,

Gavin Sole had 69 and 73, Jean-Marc Bouic 79 and 76, and Cameron Olivant 76 and 79.

They then faced Drak Gardens in the semi-finals at Port Shepstone, beating them 2-1.

Cameron beat Mark Olivier 6/5, Gavin beat Jody Martin 5/4 and Jean-Marc lost to Grant Olivier 3/2.

With the wind picking up and the sun beating down, Southbroom faced Kloof, this year’s winner of the KZN league, in the afternoon.

Cameron halved with Kurt Northmore in the match that would prove vital.

Gavin beat Mark Cox 5/3 and Jean-Marc lost 2-down to Reuben van der Berg.

This meant it came down to Cameron’s game.

He needed the half to secure the win as in the event of a tie, it goes to holes countout.
With Gavin winning by a bigger margin than Jean-Marc lost, the title would go to Southbroom.

The problem was Cameron was 1-down with two to go. However, he holed a clutch putt on the 17th to halve the hole and then made a sensational up-and-down for par on the 18th to win the hole and halve the match.
He produced a bunker shot for the ages, splashing out from a horrible lie up against the lip to ‘give’.

Out of interest, Gavin has now featured in Interclub wins at San Lameer, Margate, Port Shepstone, Selborne and Umdoni, but somehow never at Southbroom. Perhaps in 2026?

The B division was won by Ethekwini B1 who beat Drak Gardens.

Frogs winners were Umkomaas over Maidstone.

In the Senior Frogs, Riverside SF2 beat Riverside SF4.

The matchplay was held at Port Shepstone and the Alliance at Southbroom on the Sunday.

Division winners were Southbroom A2 (A), Margate (B), Mount Edgecombe (Frog) and Selborne Park (Senior Frog).

Southbroom comprised Graham Sole, Cyprian Xolo and Jan Nqoko, while Margate was represented by Conrad Boonzaier, Andries Fourie and Rupert Niebuhr.

Selborne Park had Adrian van Vuuren, Tim McGregor and Tony Outram in their team.

Cameron Olivant displays deft touch around the greens.
