Seth all set for Kearsney cricket

Some exciting cricket lies ahead for the youngster.

Cricket talent Seth du Plessis (10) is looking forward to playing in the annual U11 Kearsney Festival from November 29 to December 1.

He has been invited to join the RC Challengers team, based in Port Shepstone, and recently enjoyed a practice match against a Challengers U12 invitation team at Margate Primary.

Seth, who is part of the Clinton Moodley Cricket Academy in Scottburgh, opened the bowling with his usual flair and verve and produced an economical, if wicketless, return in his two overs.

His left-arm seamers are generally treated with respect and able to get the ball to swing late.

The last time the team had a practice game, Seth managed to get run out without facing a ball.

This time around, he batted at number three, and things were a little different as he struck the ball sweetly to make 29 off 27 balls before being retired to give others a chance.

The U12s, some of whom were playing a match for the first time, made 127-4 in 20 overs.

The U11s almost chased it down, falling two runs short in an exciting final over.

As mentioned earlier, it was a practice game, so quite a few U12 batsmen retired once they had made a certain number of runs or faced enough overs.

The Kearsney tournament will see the U11s play two games a day over the three days, weather permitting.

It was supposed to be played a few months ago, but the heavens opened in the week building up to it, and preparation wasn’t even possible, never mind play, so it was postponed.

Seth is the son of Hugo and Tarryn and attends Umdoni Christian Academy, where he is in Grade 4.

The fact that he is able to trouble batsmen two and sometimes three years older than him now bodes well for his future in the game.

There is also nothing wrong with his batting, and he is able to play to both sides of the wicket quite comfortably.

The team going to Kearsney comprises Bertu van Reenen (captain), Saien Chetty, Seth du Plessis, Shaden Ellapen, Matt Graham-Jolly, JJ Grobler, Jade Jordaan, Imraan Khan, Taiyn Naicker, Jesse Langton, Zibu Malamba and Dian Schoeman.

The format is T20, in five-ball overs, with revolving batting orders. It’s sure to be competitive, but the South Coast team should be able to hold their own.

The ball is clipped legside for four by Seth du Plessis.
