Scottburgh’s Louise Lepront blazes in Morocco

The local surfer has made her community proud.

The Pro Taghazout Bay in Morocco, a World Surf League 3,000 Qualifying Series (QS) event, saw many South African surfers gather for their share of the points and prize money recently.

Being a 3,000, it has three times the amount of points on offer than any of the 1,000 QS events staged around South Africa.

South Africa was represented by Natasha van Greunen, Anastasia Venter, Jessie van Niekerk and Louise Lepront on the girls’ side.

Lepront came in 5th, Van Niekerk 9th, Venter 13th and Van Greunen 25th.

It must be noted that in her quarters against Francisca Veselko from Portugal, Lepront finished with a heat total of 16.27 for an excellent 8.5 and a 7.77 back-up ride, the second-highest heat score of the round.

However, Veselko beat her on the buzzer. It was an excellent performance that would have won most heats on most days. Still, she got $1000 and 1423 points for her efforts, which is gratifying.

The points saw her climb to the top of the African 2024/2025 Women’s Qualifying Series Final Rankings, and she now holds a comfortable lead.

There are three more events to go, and they are all 1,000s, so if Lepront manages to hold her line, she will qualify for the Challenger Series, which is the Championship Tour (CT) feeder.

The CT is the ultimate level of professional surfing, from which world champions are crowned.
