Widdies Wahoos make a splash at Midmar
The team is getting ready for another exciting swim.
The Widdies Wahoos team from Widenham Retirement Village had an unforgettable experience at the Midmar Mile last month.
With 12 swimmers taking to the water – many of whom have been part of this iconic event for over 25 years – the day was a true celebration of endurance, camaraderie and the joy of swimming.
Among them, the most seasoned participant marked an incredible milestone, having completed 36 Midmar Miles.
The atmosphere was filled with excitement and a strong sense of community, culminating in a well-deserved and festive brunch picnic after the race.
The Widdies Wahoos swimming group was founded in 2022, as many enthusiastic swimmers in the village were keen to do the annual Midmar Mile as a team.
Peta Harrison organises and leads the team in training each year.
Many swimmers also participate in the Dolphin Mile, an ocean swim series that is swum during the winter months in Durban. In this series, achievement medals for completing 80, 70 and 20 Miles, respectively, were awarded to three individual swimmers.
The monthly Durban Underwater Club league ocean swims are also popular among some of the swimmers.
This year, two swimmers will be competing at the South African Masters Championships, which will be held at the Rachael Finlayson Pool in Durban.
This is an annual pool event that is held in different provinces each year. This year is the 40th anniversary celebration of the event, with the original gala being held in the Rachael Finlayson pool. So many memories will be relived. This is a highly competitive event held over four days. Races include 50m sprints up to 800m events.
