Cuatro tennis to the fore again

Some entertaining tennis was on display.

The Ugu Tennis Association Cuatro Closed 2025 got underway last weekend, with some interesting matches played, including a number of one-sided affairs and a few closer encounters.

This is an event reserved for members of the four local clubs, namely Umtentweni, Uvongo, Douglas Mitchell and Southbroom.

The tournament kicked off with a thrilling three-setter at Umtentweni TC last Saturday afternoon, where Herman Ehlers and Geraldine Thompson beat Mike Volck and Kyla Brauteseth 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (3).

This earned the winners a match against number one seeds Daniel Francesconi and Deanne Purtell the following afternoon, with the number ones running out easy winners 6-2, 6-0.

Two singles matches were played at Southbroom TC on Saturday morning, where Ian Ackerman beat Alan Hurlbatt 6-1, 6-1, and David Rush beat Guy Spittal 6-3, 6-0.

The rest of the first-round singles matches will be played later.

There was a buzz of excitement at Tweni on Saturday afternoon, with a series of mixed doubles games played, plus one men’s doubles.

Raj Naganna and Cathy Kirton beat André Hofman and Gitti Kleiblinger 6-3, 6-2.
Brendan Els and Liesl Smith beat David Rush and Robyn Olivant 6-2, 6-0.
Bjorn and Cheryse Wikstrom beat Alan Hurlbatt and Pauline Lee 6-2, 6-1.
Bernat Kruger and Maureen Kreusch beat Naren Sunker and Mary Rawlins 6-2, 6-2.
Colin Barker and Ellene Barbadimos beat Allan and Karin Collocott 6-0, 6-1.
In the men’s doubles, Everett Duarte and Carlo Garbini beat Foxy Norton and Nigel Wareing 6-0, 6-1.

Some more mixed doubles games were played at Southbroom on Monday.
Richard Short and Sharon van der Schyff beat Stephen Delport and Venessa Johnson 6-0, 6-0.
Geoff Borchers and Renee Purtell beat Guy Spittal and Jenny Senneck 6-2, 6-3.
Johan van Niekerk and Dee Algie beat Bernat Kruger and Maureen Kreusch 6-1, 6-1.
