Para surfer is ready to ride waves
The 'surfer chick' from Port Shepstone will be catching waves for KZN at the SA Para Surfing champs in Durban on April 12 and 13.
Zubeida Bux’s story is a testament to the power of determination, courage, and an unyielding spirit.
Also well-known as the ‘surfer chick’, she is excited to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the SA Para Surfing championships in Durban on April 12 and 13.
Zubeida (56) has successfully competed in three championships – she placed fourth in 2022, second in 2023 and fifth in 2024 in Muizenberg, Western Cape.
Born in Port Shepstone into the Moosa Bux family, she completed her early education at Port Shepstone Primary.
Her first major challenge was contracting polio at a young age, which left her wheelchair-bound.
However, Zubeida refused to let this define her. Instead, she turned her challenges into stepping stones, proving that no obstacle is too great when you have a strong mind and an even stronger heart.
Despite the odds, she continued her education in England, showing the world that limitations are only as real as you allow them to be. Her journey didn’t stop there; she embraced life with open arms, diving into adventures that many would consider impossible for someone in her state. She scuba dives, jet skis, paraglides and has travelled the world, collecting experiences that most only dream of.
Zubeida’s resilience and zest for life are beautifully captured in her autobiography, Maariyah, where she shares her life journey: a story of triumph, love, and unshakable determination. Through her words, she inspires others to see challenges not as barriers but as opportunities to grow and thrive.
“Family is at the heart of my life. I have two sons who are now married, and I am a proud grandmother of five. My love and dedication to my family are a reminder that life’s greatest joys often come from the connections we nurture,” said Zubeida.
Now living in Durban, she drives, goes to the gym, and finds joy in cooking and baking. Her positivity is infectious, and her determination is unwavering.
She is a living example of what it means to live life to the fullest. She demonstrates that being wheelchair-bound doesn’t mean being bound by limitations.
“To every woman facing challenges, my story is a reminder that you are stronger than you think. Your circumstances do not define you; your resilience does. Let my journey inspire you to chase your dreams, no matter how big or impossible they may seem. Remember, the human spirit is limitless, and with determination, you can overcome anything,” said Zubeida.
