Cameron suffers case of ‘cold putter’
The Port Shepstone Country Club golfer will be working even harder after missing out on a win this holiday.
Golfer Cameron Olivant (16) didn’t have the best of times during the recent South Coast mini tour, which comprised four tournaments.
This basically meant he went without a win, and two runner-up finishes, a fourth and an eighth place weren’t much consolation for the teenager.
On day one at Southbroom, he chalked up a nine on the 3rd hole (not the first good golfer to have done that) and ended up with an 80 to finish eighth, 10 shots behind winner Asher Hollister of Kloof Country Club, who had 70.
The next day, on his home course at Port Shepstone, Cameron hit the ball well to return 16 pars, one bogey and a triple bogey.
“Couldn’t buy a putt,” he lamented. “Putter was ice cold.”
The nine came on the 9th hole, where he pulled his tee shot into trees, punched out up the 1st fairway and then went for the green but ended up on another green – used for bowls!
Was he popping in to ask his Dad for some funds for the halfway house?
“No, there was no one bowling at the time,” he laughed.
Cameron ended up in second place behind Akshay Sewpersad from Maritzburg.
Pouring rain greeted the juniors at Margate Country Club the next day, with Cameron enduring a horror start, going six over par in the first three holes.
He was level par from there, shooting 77 for fourth place, with Asher winning again on 72.
The final tournament for the South Coast swing was held at Umdoni Park, a course Cameron particularly enjoys.
He shot 74 but struggled on the greens again, the putter letting him down. Cameron placed second, two behind Asher.
It may be back to the drawing board for now, but there’s no doubt better days and lower scores lie ahead.
