Surfing dreams from Mkhlombe to J-Bay

There is a funding need of R28 000 to cover transport, food and accommodation for the team to attend SA Champs.

Three rural girls have a chance to chase surfing glory, thanks to Genesis Hope SA.

Zamakuhle Gcaba, Thando Ngwane and Entle Nyembezi are from informal settlement Mkhlombe and have earned selection to represent the Ugu District at the Sea Harvest South African Junior Surfing Championships to be held at Lower Point in Jeffrey’s Bay from October 7-11. This is the most prestigious junior surfing event in South Africa.

Their journey is powered by faith, mentorship and the grassroots work of Genesis Hope SA’s Wave of Hope Academy, which uses surfing as a tool for transformation, discipleship and empowerment.

Coach is Senzo Shange, a former Genesis student and now mentor and coach.

The girls have trained under Senzo, who himself grew up in Genesis and now leads with heart and purpose.

Families cannot afford the cost and the community is being asked to help.

You may have seen them surfing at St Michael’s beach – next time, feel free to wander across and say hello!

Jono Downham of Genesis Hope SA, hopes the community would rally to support the girls and make it possible.

“Senzo is a local hero. He’s not just coaching – he’s discipling, loving and leading. What’s happening here is sacred.”
