Interclub clean sweep for South Coast golfers

Some 210 players representing 25 different clubs from around the province braved the testing conditions.

Southern coastal teams produced the goods at a windswept KZN Ladies’ Interclub played at Southbroom Golf Club last week.

After three days of intense competition, Kim Strauss (Port Shepstone) and Mercia Goldswain (Margate) emerged as winners of the gold division.

The format is something a little different, with the ladies playing foursomes strokeplay in this division.

They shot 92, 73 and 77. Yes, you read the correctly – 92 on day one, so the next two rounds were spectacular to say the least and they ended up winning by 20 shots.

“It was interesting times on the course. It was wild with that wind, especially on days one and three. We spent more time fighting to stay on Mother Earth than playing golf, it seemed!” said Kim.

“The ball was coming back to you was in play. I’m really proud of all the ladies for sticking it out, battling the elements, all determined to finish. It’s a true testimony to ladies’ golf.”

She felt Southbroom put on a first-class show and everyone involved could be proud of their efforts.

Play started early on the final day to avoid the worst of the wind, but it still came through with menace, affecting the later starters in particular.

“The first nine was all right, but on the second nine I almost died!” laughed Mercia, glad to be fininshed.

She thought the course was in spectacular condition, noting that the greens were lightning fast, but true. “It was only the wind that was a problem.””

Southbroom professional Derek James was impressed with the players for keeping their cool in what he described as outrageous conditions.

Upper South Coast neighbours Natalie Singer and Heather Parsonage of Umkomaas Golf Club held their nerve to win the silver division by one point from Durban Country Club.

It was also close in the bronze division, where Jennifer Duncan and Cecelia Verster of Port Shepstone CC scored 96 points to win by two from Margate CC’s Suzette Olivier and Debbie Marx.

In third place on 91 points were Heleen Hissey and Jenny Brewis (San Lameer), counting out Annemarie Bruwer and Lynne Blackstock (Southbroom).
