Margate scout earns Springbok award

The prestigious award recognises exceptional leadership, dedication and discipline.

Ty de Bruyn (18) from the 1st Margate Scout Group has achieved the highest honour in Scouting – the Springbok Scout Award.

Only a handful of scouts reach this level each year, making Ty’s achievement one of exceptional distinction within the scouting movement.

The prestigious award recognises exceptional leadership, dedication and discipline. To qualify, scouts must complete a series of demanding tasks before turning 18 – a milestone Ty reached just in time.

His journey included 40 hours of community service, a 30km expedition hike and a three-day camp, where he trained younger scouts in a specific skill.

Christiaan Pieters of 1st Margate Scout Group awards Ty de Bruyn.

For his major project, Ty chose a pioneering challenge, building a self-standing structure over six metres tall, made entirely from poles and rope.

“The Springbok Award is not easily earned, it requires commitment, skill and perseverance,” said Greg Southey, KZN Commissioner, who officially presented Ty with the award.
