Golfer aces Port Shepstone Country Club’s famous 5th hole

The course has been in superb summer condition.

Rudi Steyn has gotten his golfing year off to a great start, achieving what all golfers dream of but not all achieve.

Known in his heyday as an opening batsman of some renown, he has finally achieved his first hole-in-one, this coming on the 5th hole at Port Shepstone Country Club.

He struck the perfect 9-iron, faded it in over the bunker to the red flag at the back, around 144 metres in distance, with slight wind assist from the sea side.

Rudi was playing in the MakMoer business day, which saw 72 players tee it up. He rated this achievement as only slightly lower than the 178 he scored for Free State against Western Province in the 1988/9 season at Newlands.

The WP team in that match included both Kirstens (Peter and Gary), Terence Lazard, Daryll Cullinan, Adrian Kuiper, Eric Simons, Dave Rundle and Craig Matthews.

“That has to top the hole in one, but it’s close,” he laughed.
