Daniel dominates at Cuatro tennis tournament again

The tournament, played during the month of March, has drawn to a successful close.

Daniel Francesconi has competed the triple crown in this year’s Ugu Tennis Association Cuatro tournament.

The finals scheduled for last week Sunday had to be completed during the week due to rain.

In the singles, Daniel beat Hriday Kambaran is a marathon match, with Daniel taking the win in the third set, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

He then teamed up with his father Stef in the men’s doubles to beat Bjorn Wikstrom and Brendan Els 6-1, 6-1.

The mixed doubles saw him and Deanne Purtell-Massyn beat Mick Taute and Liesl Smith 6-4, 6-2.

Zelda Smook beat Liesl Smith in two sets in the ladies’ singles in a match completed last Friday.

The ladies’ doubles was played two days before that and saw Liesl partner with Natasha Cotterell to beat Sharon van der Schyff and Cheryse Wikstrom.

The mixed plate final was awarded to Charl van Niekerk and Natasha Cotterell as Richard Short and Sharon had to withdraw, with Sharon having to leave for Doha.

The sportsmanship trophy was awarded to Katie Weller. She showed tremendous maturity despite her young age by displaying incredible tenacity and determination on court.

RESULTS

Men’s singles:
Daniel Francesconi vs Hriday Kambaran 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

Men’s doubles:
Stef Francesconi/Daniel Francesconi beat Bjorn Wikstrom/Brendan Els 6-1, 6-1.

Ladies’ singles:
Zelda Smook beat Liesl Smith 6-2, 7-6.

Ladies doubles:
Liesl Smith/Natasha Cotterell beat Sharon van der Schyff/Cheryse Wikstrom 6-3, 6-1.

Mixed doubles:
Daniel Francesconi/Deanne Purtell-Massyn beat Mick Taute/Liesl Smith 6-4, 6-2.

Mixed Plate:
Charl van Niekerk/Natasha Cotterell beat Lomon Rautenbach/Renee Purtell 6-2, 4-6, 15-13.
Richard Short/Sharon van der Schyff beat Brendan Els/Katie Weller 6-2, 6-3.
Winners were Charl and Natasha walkover.
