SA champs beckons for South Coast swimmers
The swimmers are Zuriel Pakkiri, Peter Koegelenberg, Kirsty Koegelenberg, Alex-Zandré Labuschagne and Leah Scott.
Winter may be approaching but that doesn’t mean the region’s top age group swimmers haven’t been in the pool.
On the contrary, the SA School Nationals in Cape Town awaits and there has been a lot of training.
Five teenagers from the coast will be in action when it takes place from April 23 to 27.
The swimmers are Zuriel Pakkiri, Peter Koegelenberg, Kirsty Koegelenberg, Alex-Zandré Labuschagne and Leah Scott.
Alex-Zandré is a member of Margate Swimming Club, the other four are with Blue Ocean Aquatics.
Zuriel attends Port Shepstone High, Peter Suid-Natal High and the three girls Southcity Christian College.
Locally, Leah and Alex-Zandré have been the top two swimmers by some margin in the age group for the past five years of high school.
They have both broken almost every single record at the inter-house galas, as well as the annual individual championship gala held every year, where placing first and second, have both broken the record.
This will be the seventh time Alex-Zandré is going to this event.
The KZN trials were held in Pietermaritzburg on February 21 and 22.
To be chosen for the KZN schools swimming team, one had to take part in the Southern KZN school trials, make the top 30 swimmers in the province for the 50m free event or top 20 in the other events to go to KZN provincial trials, and take part in KZN trials and place in the top five in the province and obtain the SA schools qualifying times.
The team is then selected by a panel of six selectors, with selections based on position, qualifying times and events swum.
