Parkrun launch in Port Edward draws big crowd

The weekly parkrun is expected to become a regular highlight for residents and visitors alike.

The launch of parkrun at Beaver Creek Coffee Estate in Port Edward on April 18 proved a major success, drawing more than 300 people to the area.

A total of 277 runners and walkers officially crossed the finish line, with many more supporters and spectators adding to the turnout.

Among those in attendance was renowned Comrades Marathon legend Bruce Fordyce, founder of South African Parkrun 13 years ago.

The great idea was bought to life by Simphiwe Mngwengwe (KZN-based teacher, academic, and avid marathoner), Allan Payne (KZN parkrun ambassador) and Beaver Creek’s Robby Cumming.

Cumming described the event as an exciting milestone. “It was amazing to see so many new faces at Beaver Creek. The car park was full,” he said.

He added that the event had a positive ripple effect on the local economy, with visitors supporting nearby businesses. “It’s great for business on the Lower South Coast, as people visited restaurants from Mac Banana to us,” he said.

The launch follows a 15-month preparation process, with organisers pleased to finally see the initiative come to life.

With strong community support and enthusiasm evident from the first event, organisers are already looking ahead.

“We cannot wait for next Saturday,” said Cumming.

The weekly parkrun is expected to become a regular highlight for residents and visitors alike.

A fresh 08:00 is the starting time. See you there!
