Umdoni stumble in golf league opener

The handicap league for the year is up and running.

Umdoni Park league golfers went down 9-3 to defending champions Southbroom at Port Shepstone CC last Sunday.

This was in the opening round of the 2026 Southern KZN Handicap Golf League.

They lost the morning greensomes 3-1, although it was a lot closer than that score suggests.

Greensomes is a format where both players tee off and then the best drive is chosen and alternate shots played from there.

Beano du Plessis and Riek Janse van Rensburg halved their game against Werner Duggan and Ross McKay.

Steve Swain and Rory Reen lost 7/6 to Grant Richards and Talan Roos.

Jacques Kirstein and Gordon Ross halved with Brian Jolliffe and Cody Dry.

Jordan Troughton and PJ Swanson lost 2/1 to Cyprian Xolo and Grantie Richards.

The singles weren’t too good.

Riek lost 4/3 to Werner, Beano lost 2/1 to Ross, Rory beat Talan 6/5, Steve lost 3/2 to Grant, Gordon lost 2/1 to Brian, Jacques lost 3/2 to Cody, PJ beat Grantie 2/1 and Jordan lost 4/3 to Cyprian.

Out of interest, Umdoni’s handicaps totalled 52 to Southbroom’s 54.

In the other game, hosts Port Shepstone beat Margate 10-2. Selborne Park had a bye.

Round 2 is at Southbroom on Sunday, June 21. Southbroom will play Selborne and Umdoni will play Margate with Port Shepstone having a bye.
