Interzone challenge awaits Southern KZN golfing trio

Three Mid South Coast golfers will be part of the Southern KZN golf team that will play in the annual KZN Interzone tournament this weekend.

It takes place at Prince’s Grant Golf Club in KwaDukuza (Stanger) from July 24-26.

The players in question are Jan McDermott (Umdoni Park), Marno Langeveldt (Selborne Park) and Tiaan Bekker (Selborne Park).

McDermott is a veteran of many, many Interzones, while Langeveldt and Bekker will be on debut.

The last time Interzone was held at Prince’s Grant was in 1998. McDermott was part of that team, which captained by Leo Pillay (Umdoni Park), won the tournament.

For those who enjoy some history, the team in 1998 comprised Jaco van Zyl, Michael McGill, Marc Bormann, Jan McDermott, Garth Mulroy, Ben McGill, Leo Pillay and David Rush. In that order.

But back to this coming weekend.

The first day is 36 holes strokeplay which is divided into morning and afternoon rounds for team point scoring purposes.

The best six of eight count towards this.

Then it’s matchplay on Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon, followed by one more session of matchplay on Sunday morning.

Southern KZN are defending champions, having won at Kokstad last year.

However, Ilembe Golf Federation (North Coast) are usually very strong at home and will start as favourites.

Northern KZN and Zululand may challenge, depending on who is available for selection.

East Griqualand don’t usually have enough depth to make a serious run for the title.

Southern KZN’s team comprises Jean-Marc Bouic (captain Southbroom), Tiaan Bekker (Selborne Park), Marno Langeveldt (Selborne Park), Jan McDermott (Umdoni Park), Jan Nqoko (Southbroom), Cameron Olivant (Port Shepstone), Gavin Sole (Southbroom) and Cyprian Xolo (Southbroom).
