Cameron Olivant (17) has now won the Port Shepstone Country Club matchplay title three times, to go with his strokeplay victory earlier this year.
He did it the hard way on July 19, needing to win the last two holes against Gerry Terblanche to keep the match alive.
This he managed to do, with a superb birdie at the par three 17th.
“I holed a putt of about eight foot, it hit a bit of a speed wobble and only just dropped into the hole,” he said.
He followed this up with a rock-solid par on the 18th and with Gerry having to chip out of the bush, four was enough to win the hole.
This meant a playoff, but unfortunately Gerry was already late for another appointment and conceded the match.
Cameron was supposed to play Gerry in last year’s final, but Gerry had to withdraw due to a back injury sustained while surfing. Maybe his luck will turn next year.
The year before that Cameron beat Gavin van Wyk to claim his maiden victory.
The semi-finals this year were quite exciting, with Cameron only seeing off Gavin on the 17th hole.
This included his shot of the day, his second to the par five 13th which he struck to ‘give’ distance, resulting in some ‘high praise’ from Gavin.
In the other semi-final, Byron Henning pushed Gerry into extra holes, so it was an entertaining day all round.
