Music provides food for the soul
The touring choir stopped to entertain music fans in Margate.
LOVERS of choral music enjoyed a special treat at the Margate Retirement Village last Sunday.
The Combined Phoenix and Harare Male Voice Choir from Zimbabwe is currently touring South Africa and accepted an invitation to stage a concert at the Village.
The Harare Male Voice Choir is the oldest existing choir in Zimbabwe. It was formed by members of the Royal Air Force stationed at Cranborne Barracks, in Harare in 1941. The Phoenix Choir, formally known as the Caledonian Society Choir, was formed in 1959.
Over the years, both choirs have toured Zimbabwe extensively, delighting audiences with their particular brands of musical expertise. They have competed against each other at the annual eisteddfod on many occasions.
Owing to a decline in members, the two choirs merged in 2004 and their synergies have resulted in stronger membership and a rejuvenated choir.
In 2011 the choir toured the United Kingdom where it received rapturous applause. This year, the pre-tour concerts in Harare were very well received.
