Let there be sards

Now we need to practise patience as we wait for the sardine showdown.

IF the aloes are blooming then the sardines are on the way.

And every year as the weather cooled the silver fish would arrive on our shores.

However, for the past few years the ‘Greatest Shoal on Earth’ – the migration of sardines up the east coast has been very disappointing.

Some blame global warming as the sea temperature remains too high, while others accuse foreigner trawlers of scooping up all the fish.

Despite the sards being so elusive, we are an optimistic lot here on the South Coast and we are still going to have our annual Sardine Festival which was launched in grand style this week.

Now we need to practise patience as we wait for the sardine showdown.
