Editor's note

How do you treat your animals?

We can't live with our heads in the sand.

IT has been said that you can judge a nation by the way it treats its animals.

If that is the case then, judging by our front page story this week, and indeed the recent snare story, we aren’t doing too well.

There really is no excuse for what appears to have been neglect and/or abuse.

Fortunately, the SPCA does fantastic work, often in trying circumstances. This is an organisation that needs as much support as it can get.

See page 17 for ways you can help.

On another note … there has been much discussion about how much crime the paper should report on.

On one hand there is the duty to reflect what is happening in society. On the other there is a need to be responsible and balanced in our reporting as we are, after all, a tourism destination.

An interesting fact gleaned from our website stats is that, generally, the gorier the story, the more clicks it gets.

However, we are also aware that ‘Herald Thursday’ is a highlight of the week for many, a time to enjoy the paper and forget about life’s worries for a little while.

Speaking of worries, the pool stages of the Rugby World Cup shouldn’t present any problems for the Springboks.

But that will change when the knockout stages start. Until then, enjoy!

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
