High road death toll

The stats make for sad reading.

SOUTH Africa has been rated among the most dangerous places in the world to be on the road.

A recent report by the World Health Organisation on road safety showed that the country’s road death rate stood at 25 deaths per 100 000. This is more than double the European average of 9,3 and far higher than the world average of 17.5.

Another sad statistic from the report is that South Africa also has the highest percentage of drunken driver road deaths – 58 percent.

And here on the South Coast it has been another black weekend on the roads.

Motorists simply continue to float the rules.

We have good road safety legislation but too many reckless drivers.
