WHILE antiretroviral treatment has lowered the death rate for people living with HIV, the rate of new infections is still too high.
Speaking at the national World Aids Day event (which was held on the South Coast), Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa said more than 2 000 teenage girls and young women become infected each week.
Although the dynamics of HIV transmission in young women and teens is complex, the Deputy President said ‘Sugar Daddies’ were contributing to the high transmission.
We need to give these young people the means with which to protect themselves.
In South Africa, 10 percent of the population (6,4-million) have HIV.
This is an emergency – we cannot become complacent.
