Putting patients at risk

Drastic action needs to be taken.

THERE are serious concerns about the lack of working CT scanners at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

It is one of eight provincial hospitals where vital treatment and diagnostics machines are not working.

A newspaper report claimed that a wrangle over a R500-million contract for the leasing of the equipment is denying patients the life-saving scans and radiological treatment that is needed.

Some patients requiring urgent brain scans have had to wait up to three weeks for an appointment at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital.

This is very worrying as patients can die if they are diagnosed with cancer too late because of the unavailability of the required machines for diagnosis.

The health department has also been accused of lacking capacity to handle the matter.

Better care of equipment needs to be taken, lives are at stake.
