Halls of shame

We cannot have these halls of shame.

ONE of the telltale signs that an election is coming up, is the building of new halls.

These facilities are important to communities as they serve as meeting places for many functions and events.

But the question must be asked – Why spend millions erecting new ones and then leave them to crumble?

Halls in the outlying areas have been totally vandalised and had most if not all the equipment – including light fittings and ceilings, stolen.

But the ones in Margate, Uvongo and Port Shepstone are also deteriorating at a rapid rate. And the costly Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre is also in dire need of urgent maintenance.

The municipalities need to take better care of these facilities and are urged to repair and protect them.

Communities too, must respect the facilities, the litter left there last week is unacceptable.

We cannot have these halls of shame.
