Editor's note

Sardine mystery solved?

There's a glimmer of hope.

FOR the past few years local anglers have blamed illegal fishing vessels for the disappearance of the `Greatest Shoal on Earth’.

Once the aloes began to bloom the fishermen knew the sardines were on their way.

It was the best-known marketing tool in the local tourism authority’s arsenal.

Film crews from all over the world filmed the migratory phenomenon.

The recent capture of Chinese fishing ships that had entered South Africa’s 200 nautical mile exclusion zone without permits has given local anglers a glimmer of hope that the government is serious about the plundering of our marine resources.

Who knows – the ‘Greatest Shoal’ may put in an appearance once more.
