Derailing democracy

The intolerance is no good for our democracy.

POLITICAL violence has once again reared its ugly head in our area, despite oaths of peace by all parties contesting the August 3 local government elections.

A Hibberdene man and a man and a woman from Gamalakhe, all related to ANC politicians, have been killed.

In one of the incidents, a five-year-old child was also injured.

Previously such killings were attributed to other political parties, now, however, inter-party tension is being blamed.

There appears to be community dissatisfaction with some of the ANC’s candidate nominations.

Those who are jilted or retained have been warned to `guard their backs’.

This intolerance sullies our democracy.

Leaders need to stand up and speak out against this unrest.
