Delighted to back people power

Take control over your own town.

EVERY week the Herald gets many campaign emails and letters ranging from the most diverse list of subjects – from animal welfare to environmental issues.

The issue of the moment that is whipping locals up is the filthy state of South Coast towns.

Most places look tired and tacky.

But this week we are delighted to report on a community that has galvanised its `people power’ to keep its town clean, litter-free and well-maintained.

The Southbroom Urban Improvement Precinct, a Section 21, was formed by the Property Owners’ Association to procure supplementary rates to be used for the benefit of the village.

While some may argue that they already pay rates and that the implementation of UIP is simply a form of double taxation – the proof is in the well-kept state of the town.

Perhaps it is time for other communities to take control of their towns.
