Honeymoon hotel sought

A woman who honeymooned in Margate in 1947 is trying to find out about the old Parade Hotel.

DOES anyone remember the old Parade Hotel in Margate?

A former South African, Alan Doyle, emigrated to the United States 25 years ago but is back in South Africa visiting his 90-year-old mother in Cape Town.

He forwarded a photograph of the Parade Hotel, where his parents, Patrick Doyle and Marcia Kruger Doyle spent their honeymoon in May 1947. Recently family members visited Margate but could not locate the site of this old hotel. They think it was in Marine Drive but cannot be sure.

For sentimental reasons, Marcia would dearly love to know what happened to the Parade and wonders if any South Coasters would be able to tell her.

Two long-time South Coasters, Jill Bothma and Liz Page, think it might have been the building in Marine Drive next to the one that houses the Friar Tuck restaurant, where Natalia Estates was situated for many years.

Jill believes the parents of her late husband, Robin, bought the Parade and incorporated into the La Garde Hotel, which they owned then.

If you think you can identify the site of the old hotel or or the building, or if you can shed some light on the hotel’s history, please contact us at southcoastherald@dbn.caxton.co.za or by leaving a comment below.
