A SPATE of burglaries over the past year has left Margate residents and shopowners living in dread.
Margate was in the top five for burglaries in KwaZulu-Natal when the police released the national crime statistics last week.
Many locals believe the seaside resort has been taken over by criminals.
They are also unhappy about the ‘unsavoury characters’ who descend on the town in droves every weekend and cause mayhem.
Recently a number of shopfronts along Marine Drive in the central business district had their windows smashed.
Business owners fear that unless drastic action is taken to rid the town of crime Margate will lose its holidaymakers.
