The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
1965: Beatles at Buck House
The four members of The Beatles pop group were formally presented with their MBEs by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace. The Fab Four were relieved not to find a picket of irate war veterans and other pillars of the British establishment waiting for them outside the palace gates.
Some returned their Medals of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in response to the announcement in June 1965 that The Beatles were to receive the same honour.
Prime Minister Harold Wilson included the list in his Honours List. His decision was thought to reflect his desire for popularity rather than his taste in music.
