Join one of these Carols by Candlelight services
On the South Coast it is a much loved `hardy annual' and there are many services to which everyone is invited.
The word carol actually means song of praise and Christians have been singing these for thousands of years. However, the tradition of singing carols at Christmas, was introduced by St Francis of Assisi in 1223, when he incorporated them into his nativity plays first staged in Italy. Then about 400 years later in 1647, Oliver Cromwell banned the singing of carols in England. But people still sang them in secret and the tradition survived.

The Rotary Club of Hibiscus will join forces with Douglas Mitchell Sports Club at the sports grounds this Saturday (15th) at 6.30pm for a `Carols by Candlelight’ service. Jonathan Brauteseth will provide the entertainment and food and beverages will be on sale. Phone Brian at 082 8290059 for more details.
Radiant Life Ministries in Palmview is staging a Christmas carnival and carol service at the church this Monday (17th) from 3pm to 10pm.
Ramsgate Lions Club holds its service at the Hibiscus Mall next Thursday (20th) at 6.30pm. Carollers are asked to take along a toy for the club to distribute to needy children.
Eyles Park (next to the tennis courts) is the venue for Southbroom Conservancy’s carol service. It takes place next Sunday (23rd) from 5.30pm.
Imbezane Mission will have its carol service at church in Bushy Vales on the 23rd from 6.30pm. The church is also collecting toys for underprivileged children. Phone Pam Avern-Taplin at 082 8901405 for details.
