January 22: On This Day in World History … briefly
Upon retirement, Borg had three residences, a penthouse in Monte Carlo, not far from his pro shop, a mansion on Long Island, New York and a small island off the Swedish coast. He later bounced back as owner of the Björn Borg fashion label. In Sweden his label has become very successful, second only to Calvin Klein.
1983: Game, set and match for Borg
Tennis star Björn Borg retires at the age of 26 – a wealthy man with an unequalled record.
Borg made his debut at 14 and two years later, he earned £40 000 in prize money. By 1981 he had won six French Open titles and five consecutive Wimbledon championships – an all-time record. Borg was a powerful player with unbeatable speed and great concentration. In 1982 Borg was barred from major championships because he had not entered the minimum number of tournaments. A request to reduce his commitments was turned down.

Borg was ranked by the ATP rankings world number one in six different stretches between 1977 and 1981 – a total of 109 weeks.
- During his career, he won a total of 77 (64 listed on the Association of Tennis Professionals website) top-level singles and four doubles titles;
- He won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality Award in 1979;
- Inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987.
- On December 10, 2006, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) gave Borg a Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Boris Becker;
- In December 2014, he was elected Sweden’s top sportsperson of all time by the newspaper Dagens Nyheter.
